Design and print a custom Casio AE-1200 faceplate
Plan a layered design, fit it to the AE-1200 faceplate template, and create a one of a kind design for your watch
The Casio AE-1200 has a distinctive multi-window display, so artwork that looks good as a rectangle may not work once it is fitted around the screen. This guide walks through designing a faceplate around those openings and printing it at a usable size. You can do the layout in the browser with the Casio AE-1200 Customizer.
Plan the design
Start with a simple idea and a few bold shapes or colours. The small windows and printed labels divide the faceplate into narrow areas, and fine details can disappear at that scale. A background pattern, colour field, map, or a few well-placed motifs are good starting points.
Gather artwork you have permission to use. The customizer accepts PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, and SVG images. You can also create a gradient in the tool and combine it with uploaded images as separate layers. Choose high-resolution source images when possible, especially if you expect to enlarge them.
Arrange artwork in the customizer
Open the AE-1200 Customizer and add one or more image files. The preview shows the artwork behind a bezel-style overlay, so you can see how it sits around the display windows. Select a layer to move, resize, fade, reorder, or remove it. Drag an image in the preview to reposition it; use the size control for more precise changes.
Check where the bezel and display windows cover or reveal the artwork in the preview. Place important details where they will remain visible; a pattern or gradient can continue behind the windows if that suits your design. Use the optional faceplate outline when you want a guide for trimming or comparing the print with your part.
Calibrate the print size
Printer settings can change the physical size of a page. Before printing the design on film, choose Print calibration test and print the test at Actual size or 100%. Measure the metric line with a ruler. In Print sizing, enter the length you measured for the line labelled 20 mm. The customizer uses that measurement to compensate the faceplate print for your printer.
Print the calibration test again after changing the measurement and confirm that the metric line now measures 20 mm. If the test still differs, check that the print dialog is not set to “Fit,” “Shrink,” or another page scaling option, then measure and adjust again. Printer drivers and browser print dialogs vary, so use the physical measurement rather than assuming the setting alone guarantees scale.
Print and check the template
Once the calibration line measures correctly, return to the design. Choose whether to include the faceplate outline, then select Print faceplate. Print a paper copy first and compare its perimeter and display openings with your faceplate. Trim gradually and check the fit before printing the final copy on film; AE-1200 variants and printer alignment can differ slightly.
Use Download PNG when you want an image of the artwork for a separate design workflow. For a physically sized template, use the print controls and calibration instead.
Before installing the printed artwork
Keep the paper test as a cutting reference. Follow the fit and clearance required by your chosen installation method, and make sure the finished piece does not interfere with the displays or buttons. If your chosen mod requires opening the watch, work carefully around the gasket and treat water resistance as compromised unless the watch has been pressure tested afterward.
The customizer prepares the artwork and print template; it does not guarantee an exact fit for every AE-1200 version. Test the paper template against your own watch before committing to film.
